The Right To Be Free Essays - A Lesson Before Dying, Free Essays The Right To Be Free The Right to Be Free In the novel A Lesson Before Dying, although Grant is an educated black man in the era of a racist society he has struggles greater than most men of his decent. I feel sorry for him because of his limitations, even though I view him as a coward. He cannot break free of his background and family. The three main female characters in the novel, Tante Lou, Miss Emma, and Vivian, restrict and limit Grant's choices. Grant realizes that freedom means leaving his small town and creating a new life, yet each woman holds a chain that keeps him from his destiny and the right to be free. First, Tante Lou, his aunt holds Grant from his dreams by refusing to let him go his own way. Tante Lou wants Grant to stay at home with her and take care of her. But, in the time the novel takes place, it wasn't common for young men stay with their elders and help out, especially when Grant has a college degree and can accomplish so much. Tante Lou took advantage of this in any means necessary, using the fact that Grant is family and in essence owes it to her to stay and help out. We can see this on page 14 when Tante Lou forces Grant to talk to Mr. Henri about seeing Jefferson. You are going up there with us Grant, or you will not sleep in this house tonight. Tante Lou denies Knodt 2 Grant choices that men his age have. Next, Miss Emma, who doesn't have a family relation to Grant, also restricts his choices in life. Miss Emma plays an important role in the novel by being Jefferson's godmother, and in a painstaking situation. She asks Grant in a way that gives him no real choices to teach Jefferson to be a man. Leaning on her ability to persuade, and using her power as an extensive friend to Tante Lou she can basically tell Grant what to do and gets away with it. She knew Grant did not want to go and teach Jefferson, but still went ahead with it. Driving along the St. Charles River I could feel Emma not looking at me, not looking at anything..just thinking. Like my Aunt she knew how much I hated all of this.(p.68) Miss Emma therefore forces Grant to do matters that she wants, not what Grant thinks he is capable of doing. Thirdly, Vivian, the love of his life, is also limiting Grant's ability to make decisions based strictly on his own intent. She understands Grant's need to leave and see new things, but has restrictions in her life that will not allow her to help Grant begin a new existence. Vivian is in the middle of a drawn out divorce and needs to see it through so she can maintain custody of her children. We see an example of this on page 93. Let's go somewhere and spend the night. Baton Rouge, New Orleans- anywhere, Grant asks. I can't, My Babies. This sentence alone describes the turmoil she is going through with her own threatening aspects and how it effects Grant's choices. I think the book is an intriguing novel and surfaced important issues dealt with in society. Religion, racism, and many other articles of today are just a few. But, Grant is a complex character and can be depicted thoroughly. His education holds him to a new Knodt3 standard not expected of people back then, but withholds him from reaching his dreams. He cannot find what he is looking for in this small town that A Lesson Before Dying takes place in. I feel sorry for him until Jefferson teaches him other factors involved to being a real and distinct kind of man. He evolves dramatically. But, his need to be free is still restrained by Tante Lou, Miss Emma, and Vivian in different, yet important ways.

Just about eight years later, his father would no longer be with him, as William Emerson died in 1811. The Emerson family was left to a life marked by poverty. Ralph's mother, Ruth, was left as a widow having to take care of five sons. However, Ralph's life seemed to carry on smoothly. He would end up attending Harvard College and persue a job of teaching full time. While teaching as a junior pastor of Boston's Second Church, his life gained more meaning when he married Ellen Louisa Tucker. Journal entries and love letters he wrote at that time expressed lots of feelings and emo... ...l ideas ever created. His famous essays are "History," "Art," "The Poet," and the famous "Self-Reliance." He gathered his essays into two volumes. The first was released in 1841, and the second was released in 1844. Hijra community INTRODUCTION: We know a community is a group of people who work with one another building a sense of trust, care, and support. In Bangladesh Hijra community is a strong community, although they are the most neglected people in our society. Higras are the people who are neither male nor female. In our society they are not treated as human being but hijras claim that they are more capable than men or women. Because they are the combination of both male and female, they are capable of doing the work, which is preferable by men and women.Their demand from society is not so much; they just want to be treated as normal human being and the basic human needs. SUMMARY: 1 (MOVIE: COMMON GENDER) The movie is a reflection of androgen’s life cycle. Androgens were look like men but dressed up like women. So that people teach them and never showed a minimum respect for them. There was one leader of their community who instructed others. One of the characters of this movie was â€Å"Shusmita†. Her parents left her to the hijra community because they think that it was very ashamed things for them that their child was hizra.Shusmita had a male friend named â€Å"Shonjoy† who was also betraying her. After that she felt that there was no meanings of her life for exist. Then she committed suicide. Another character of this film was â€Å"Babu†. The hizra community called her â€Å"Bably†. She always missed her family but if she came home she has been beaten by her brother. Here it is clear that people always keep negative impression about them no matter how hizra communities behave. They collect money from market to survive because societies people never give them work. The most painful part of the movie was people don’t want to entomb hizra with them.This movie focused that androgen people could never have the respect either mortal life or eternal life. There are some families whom are left their child to maintain the social status.But some family kept them. The boy gradually grown up but he cannot change himself because he starts to discover himself that he neither boy nor a girl but a mix of both. He falls into identity crisis as they find feminine emotions trapped inside a manly body. They don’t treat as human because they don’t have any rights, like they cannot take part in the burial of their parents. Lots of situation like this force him to join a hijra community. Over there they find friends like them, so they don’t feel loneliness anymore, and the guru of the community became their parents.She named them newly like â€Å"Salam† become â€Å"Salma†. They get their livelihood and security with and through the community. SUMMARY: 3 They swing between both sexes: hijras as â€Å"asexual others† There are two types of gender male and female, which are classified by our society. But there is another type called â€Å"Hijra† whom is clam that they are third gender. Hijra of Bangladesh defines them as human who are neither male nor female. They can be easily identified by their get-up, language and a very different style of clapping. They developed a distinctive lifestyle gradually.They formed as a community with strong sense of social solidarity. Hijra society of Bangladesh divided into several bands but there is a strong unity and coordination among them. Through every community have separate area, they often visit another community and they welcomed with warmly and greatly treated beca use hijra society is very hospitable. Hijras are mostly illiterate, jobless and homeless. They can barely manage food for survival or see a good doctor for checkup. They have no stable flow of income. In India hijra have a high income rather than Bangladesh.But in our country hijras are fighting hard to survive. They sing and dance for new born baby; they also collect money from market places. What are those barriers? Case study: 1 Putuli was another member of Rayer Bazaar hijra community. She told us that she came into this community when she was nine years old. Because of her hormone problem her family left her there. Although her mother loved her lot but unable to stop her father to relinquish her from the family. She told us that still she wanted to stay with her family but when she go for her family they behaved very rude with her. They don’t even touch her and made face like they have se en a alien.Then she told us about their leader on the Rayer Bazaar hijra community who takes care of her as like her child. The leader decided the role of each member and the leader was selecting by concerning their age no matter how active she works. She told us that they dance and sing on society’s birthday party and marriage ceremonies but basically they collect money from market to survive. Then she told that the existence of the society is very tough and painful for her because she always asked herself that who wanted to bag people for money or forced them for giving money for free, her answer is may be no one.It proves that she also have a very strong self-respect. They just don’t understand that it is not any diseases but hormone problem so why people looking at them very oddly with negative point of view. One of the most important things about their community was although they know that they were HIJRA but they didn’t like that word. Then she smilingly t old us that she can handle any kind of problem easily because she has the ability of both male and female. She and her friends can maintain any situation by herself without any help of other by showing their disability approach or brain.This was the main strength of their community that without any political or social backup they live their life with each other. There are different kinds of hijra of their community who belong various religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Buddha etc. They celebrate their religious occasion like other people of society. Case Study-2 Bala is a Hijra (androgen), who is a member of Rayerbazer hizra community. The size of the community is large, where 65 people live together. They have a leader in this community who is the eldest person of the community, they call her khala, and she plays a vital role in the community.She did not born in the community, she was borrowed from her family when she was 6 years old. Her family doesn’t try to bring her back or stay connected with her. They don’t take any baby because they think if their next baby born as hijra. She told the community has a strong network through they get the news of new hijras. Hijras are easily identifiable because of their nature and attitude. Where all the members along Bala collect money shops and give them all to khala, khala ensure the livelihood for all the members. The brotherhood is so strong between them, if anyone faces any problem everyone comes forward to help.The strength of the community is one for all, all for one. But they never have the happiness of family. They want life partners but that is quite impossible. Her demand from the society is everyone should treat them like a normal human being. Sometime they committed suicide because they cannot handle the way they are treated. She don’t like to collect money from other, she claims that â€Å"I can do any work, like others I also have hands and those are strong. We are not usel ess; we can contribute for the country. We just need opportunity. † They work as the entertainer of the society. But they don’t want to be the clown of the society.They don’t want to live by begging from others. She don’t like the way people look at her. People called her Hijra, which is very painful to her. She wants to known by her name. She came from a Muslim family and still maintains her religion. Like her other members of different religion live together without facing any problem. Case Study-3 Hanna is a member of Keranigonj Hijra community. First time when I saw her she was in a barber shop. She seemed very friendly. I took a short discussion with her. The community where she lives is not a large one. The community is leaded by her guru.She come into this community when she was 12 years old. Her family was ashamed of her. She left her family because of the torture of her father and some of the members of that community offer to join them. Here she found family, friend, food and shelter. After 13 years she is holding a important position in the community. They basically collect money from the local markets and shops. They also participate in the dance of marriage and puja. When they got any information about new born baby they go and dance for money. When I asked about the problem that she faced, she replied there is problem in every aspect of the life of a hijra.One of the problems is people react very oddly when they saw a hira. She said they look like they saw an alien on the street. She handles this problem very interestingly; that she thinks that she is a beauty queen and no one can took their eyes off her. Although they are very confident about themselves but they need the support of their community to survive in the society. People don’t respect them as human being but they have more attachments and feelings, moreover they are very religious. As they are also living human being, they want the basic human needs fr om society.They want to get out of their traditional lifestyle. They want to live in normal human society as a normal human being. They want to work for the society as well as for the country. They are strong and there is no doubt about it, because their community is surviving without any political and social backup. CONCLUSION: Above all it can be say that hijra community who demand themselves as third gender also part of our society. They want nothing but the minimum respect for them and basic rights by which they can survive. If our society provides them chance to do something for betterment they can prove themselves as an asset.We all should help them to develop their community as well as our society by providing the facility which they deserve. It is the right time to change our point of view to them so that they can turn their weakness into strength by serving our country and never hesitate to think that they are also a part of our society. An Analysis of Les Miserables’ Bring Him Home Essay

One of the most popular songs in Les Miserables is the song entitled Bring Him Home. It is sung by Jean Valjean in Act II of Les Miserables as a form of prayer to God in order for a young man named Marius to be able to return home to the woman he loves, Cosette (Guy & Llewelyn-Jones, ). The story behind the song is that Cosette was an orphan whom Jean Valjean had cared for who fell in love with the young man named Marius. However, Marius had become involved in a series of anti-government riots, which puts her relationship with Cosette in a very awkward position. Jean Valjean decides to help Marius get back to Cosette, and this song was his prayer (Guy and Llewelyn-Jones, ). The prominent theme in the song is the longing for the safety of another individual. It was, in a sense, finding happiness in the happiness of another, and the singer, Valjean, indicated that he wanted the young boy named Maruis to be able to be brought home safely, back to the arms of Cosette. Valjean sings to the Lord, appealing to Him, and trying to reason to Him, that Marius deserved to be able to go home. He sings: â€Å"He is young, he’s afraid, let him rest, heaven blessed. Bring him home. Bring him home. Bring him home† (NIEHS, n. d. ). Valjean goes on to sing that if he had a son, it would have been Marius, and despite the anti-government riots Marius had participated on, Valjean believes that he is a good man and he deserves to be able to have a shot at life for he is very young. In fact, Valjean even sings that: â€Å"You can take, you can give, let him be let him live. If I die, let me die. Let him leave, bring him home† (NIEHS, n. d. ). You can read the first one here and the second one here. Now, you’ve done it. You’ve launched a writing group, or you’re about to. What now? It’s time to organize. Here’s what to do at the first meeting: 1. Break the Ice Give each member a few minutes to introduce themselves, or try the team-building game Two Truths and a Lie: Have members come prepared to present, with a straight face, three interesting things about them; everyone else votes on which two items are true and which is false (though it can be a variation on the truth or an aspiration). 2. Set a Schedule How often will the group meet? Every week is probably pushing it, so vote on whether sessions will be held every two weeks or monthly. Agree on meeting duration. (Two hours is a good block of time.) Ask members to commit to attending regularly and arriving punctually. 3. Establish Goals What do you and the other members want to get out of the group? Is everyone determined to get published, or is the experience just a way to solicit feedback in a supportive environment and work on writing skills? Make sure everyone has a common ambition. Consider creating a mission statement. 4. Determine Protocol Briefly discuss meeting structure: Does everyone read every time, or do members alternate every two or three meetings? Do members email work in progress in advance so that others can prepare critiques, or do they give cold readings? Will your group alternate between both strategies? Consider having members take turns preparing mini-tutorials based on their experiences or research, like describing the different archetypal characters or sharing a list of plot pitfalls. Or give each person a chance to share an advice tidbit from an accomplished author. 5. Take a Break Allow five or ten minutes halfway through the session for a snack and small talk, but don’t let it drag out. 6. Read Samples Give everyone a chance to read briefly from a work in progress. Have members start right off without a preface and then take a moment to talk about the story. Save critiques for subsequent sessions this is just a chance for everyone to get a taste of others’ writing styles. 7. Plan Ahead Agree on what to do next time: Have everyone email an excerpt to the group a week before the next session, prepare a short selection to read aloud, or plan to bring hard copies of a sample passage to hand out. (Materials for cold readings by writers or others should be no more than a couple of pages; excerpts sent in advance can be longer). Decide what the focus will be each time: crafting an opening scene, establishing character, etc. Focus on technical aspects for a while before delving into content. It is understood by research that, college students drink alcohol with a sole purpose of getting drunk. Once they are drunk they are devoid of their senses and involve in frights, raping, social violence and other outrageous activities. It also badly hampers their education purposes and makes them alcohol addicted people who serve no value to the society. It is seen that, white college student engage more in binge drinking than black students.â€Å"Only 16.5 percent of African-American college students had engaged in binge drinking, about one third the rate for white college students, which then stood at 48.1 percent†. Mostly black college students refrain from drinking alcohol as they do not take is as a so called â€Å"cool thing†. Additionally most of them belonging to poor social class cannot afford to buy alcohol. The students as they turn major, is already victimized to alcohol, and this affect they thinking and responding ability. It is not a wrong thing to consume alcohol, but the drinking process should not get out of control so as to put their health at risk. Most of the college students being away from home town enjoy a sense of freedom which makes them get influenced by alcohol excessively.Additionally, their parents and family members are away and they have nobody to control their activities. It is a saddening fact that college students in their productive years get accustomed to binge drinking and lose their opportunity to build foundation of their future career. It is seen that youngsters who get started with alcohol consumption around the age of 19 are more likely to be under its influence in future and become heavy binge drinkers. Unfortunately, people like this also drives under alcohol intoxication and meet with accidents and lose their lives. As per (CSPI) â€Å"Frequent binge drinkers are 21 times more likely t han non-binge drinkers to miss classes, engage in vandalism, be injured or hurt, engage in unplanned sexual activity†.
